Honoring
the memory of

Suzanne Frances Spurrier

Suzanne, daughter of William Joshua Spurrier and Golda Lucille Price Spurrier, was born December 21, 1947, in Zanesville, Ohio, and died December 23, 1998, two days after her 51st birthday.

On the memorial program was a copy of the song A Beautiful Life (each day I'll do a golden deed...) that her mother often sang and Suz (as she was often called) had adopted as her way of life. It was appropriate. That song, when I can get it, will eventually accompany the reading of this tribute and this last sentence will disappear.

Suzanne attended Norval Park Church of Christ all of her young life and was baptized there on her eleventh birthday. She graduated from Zanesville High School in 1966 where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She attend Ohio Valley College before coming to Harding University in 1967. In 1968, when her mother died, Suzanne stayed home to work and help her family. The following year, she returned to Harding and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While teaching fifth grade at Gihon Elementary School in Parkersburg, West Virginia (1971-75), she was named Teacher of the Year. In 1975, Suzanne earned a Master of Arts degree from West Virginia University. It was then that she moved to Searcy and took a position at the Harding library. She was awarded a Master of Library Science from Indiana University in 1985 and was elected into Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honor Society.

Suzanne enjoyed being involved in many organizations including being a current member of Associated Women for Harding, the American and Arkansas Association of University Librarians, and the Arkansas Association of University Women, and an officer in Harding Business Women. She founded SISTERS, a share-oriented computer network for women and was a charter member of Networthy Investment group. Suzanne received the Harding University Distinguished Service Award, 1993. Also a Bible Class teacher and a Hospice Volunteer, she loved making sourdough bread and delivering it to shut-ins and spending countless hours sitting with the sick. She considered it an honor to care for her father when he came to live with her for the last five years of his life. She enjoyed life to its fullest and wanted to assist others in doing the same.

A member of the College Church of Christ, Suzanne's strong faith sustained her throughout her life. When she was diagnosed with cancer in June, 1997, she said she was in a "win-win" situation. She took every opportunity she felt the Lord might work through for healing and put her faith completely in Him. She was always uplifted and found strength in the prayers and faith of fellow Christians. This unwavering faith was shown in her last prayer request for the Lord to take her home.

At the time of her death Suzanne was survived by her sister, Grace Steil and her husband Butch, and two nephews: Bill Steil and his wife Carrie, and Dana Steil and his wife Mandy.
